Final Friday Event – Delano Barbeque March 27th 530 pm – 730 pm

Final Friday Event at Delano Barbeque March 27th 530 - 730 pm

Travis Hinnen, Cessna illustrator and owner of Flyin’ Monkey Photobooth, is bringing all of these together – along with some of Wichita’s best BBQ – this month at Delano Barbecue Company.  The exhibition will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. , March 27, 2015  at the restaurant, located at 710 W. Douglas as a part of the arts celebration.

Hinnen will exhibit his color photography that includes superheroes and other Lego figures from different genres in a variety of settings and locations. He will also bring a few of his abstract works, but it’s the Lego pieces that obviously hold a place in his heart.

“I’ve always been a Lego freak,” said Hinnen, a Wichita State University and Remington High School graduate.

It would appear that the affinity for the little brick men and women has been passed down to the newest generation, as Hinnen said he recently discovered his daughter took a few of the Lego images “to keep them safe.” The 36-year-old laughed, “I know where they are, though, so it isn’t that bad. I was kind of flattered, actually.”

Hinnen may be a Lego fan, but he hasn’t let the adoration take over his home.

“Oh, no!” he said with a smile, “I tried to start collecting at one point, but really now I just stick to the figures. Otherwise, it would be a little extreme and take over the whole house. I don’t think my wife would like that.”

Wife, Crystal, is also an artist as is his daughter, 15, who is into photography just like dad – and likes to paint. Encouraged by his family in all his artistic endeavors, he said he just decided within the past few years to combine two of his loves – Lego figures and photography – into one hobby.

Hinnen will be available during the Final Friday festivities and said children are most definitely welcome to come see his work. Delano Barbecue Company owner Michelle Suddeth agrees, encouraging art fans to bring their children along for dinner and an early night of viewing. The team at the restaurant is bringing in a Lego table and dinner will feature a free S’mores-making bar for children and adults alike to enjoy during the exhibit.

“I think they’ll like the photos, they might even recognize a few of their favorite superheroes – I know my kids did,” said Suddeth. “This is a perfect exhibit for Delano Barbecue Company and the Delano area. We’re family-friendly and very laid-back, so art that appeals to children is a great fit for us.

“And the adults at the restaurant are looking forward to it, too!” she added, with a laugh. Don’t be surprised if you find Suddeth or one of her employees rummaging through the Lego table with the kids.

Children are also the focus of the restaurant’s monthly Final Friday philanthropy project. Delano Barbecue Company will donate 10 percent of the night’s sales to Dilly’s Place of Conway Springs, Kan. Hinnen and his family have been actively involved with the development of this playground, which was designed to accommodate children with disabilities, since its inception.
